About
mateosejfryd.eu is an archive of my experiments, with the simple hierarchy of the front page is more relevant than whats in the drawer. This page is dedicated to exploring the evolution of my thinking through words 🙂
In short what I think i do:
My works explore spatial practice through the study of material phenomenology, cultural symbolism, and contemporary culture. Often employing contradiction, my work creates a stage for revising the image of a ‘generic object,’ alienating the mundane and addressing its invisible cultural influence. For instance, my recent project on the traces of a disappearing religion investigated how Christianity exploited human posture, comparing it to modern office furniture. The explorations of cultural restrictions stem from my fascination with the democratic process and the critical disengagement I experience toward it, a feeling I seek to overcome in my work.

Drives: The Anatomies of the A2 explores the geopoetics of migration on the A2/E30 EU highway, where the story of the road and belonging is told from the perspective of a passenger. The narration challenges the notion of a cultureless place, by using fragmentation and preservation as methods of storytelling. By framing the loss of control as an opportunity for listening, it invites the visitor to confront the feelings of nostalgia, offering an alternative way to engage through departing.

For around a year now I have been inspired by the phenomena provoked by the meeting points between architecture and landscapes, the influence of a horizon on the daily habits of people.

Material defines the playground for my ideas, what follows is complexity that sprouts from a basic origin.
wood, metal, video, emotion…Â Whatever I choose, it is for me to think about its meaning – a meaning that I like to flip on its head, so to observe it from a new perspective, as if I would see it for the first time.
To expand my understanding of a subject, I investigate what traces it leaves in related disciplines. For instance I studied performance art, musicology and electronics to gain a fresh look on the possible meaning of clay.
My moments of focus are not defined by a conclusive image. Neither is my process, an initial idea naturally transforms into a uneasy state of flux that opens doors for further development.
